Making your own modular storage cubes is satisfying and fun.
Modular storage cubes can be used individually or as a set. They are designed to work together to provide for all your storage needs. They can be stacked in any design and in any place and are often used as bookshelves or even for decoration. Some people will even use them as room dividers. Making your own wooden modular storage cubes does require some basic woodworking skills. However, with a little practice, anyone can make as many of these cubes as required.

Things You'll Need
Pressed board or wood, 1/2-inch thick
Measuring tape

Instructions

Cut your 1/2-inch pressed board or wood into 12-inch-square pieces using the table saw. Use your measuring tape to ensure each piece is equal. You will need four squares for each cube you plan to construct.

Sand the boards lightly to smooth any rough edges before assembly.

Place one board on your work surface. This is the bottom of your cube. Place a strip of wood glue along the left side of the board as close to the edge as you can get.

Stand a second board on one edge. Place it directly on the strip of glue. This will be the left side of your cube. Clamp or brace the two pieces together.

Repeat on the right side, using your glue and clamps to secure the right board in place.

Place one strip of glue on the top of both the left and the right boards, once the glue has dried enough to add stability to the structure.

Place the final board on top of the left and right boards to form the top of the cube. Make sure that everything is square and lined up before proceeding.

Add four finishing nails after the glue has dried completely, to both the right and left sides of the top board, for strength and stability. Use your hammer to gently tap these nails into the wood. Flip the entire cube over and do the same on the bottom.

Apply the wood sealer to all exposed wood, both inside and outside the cube. You should only use a light coat of sealer unless the manufacturer's directions specify otherwise. Allow the sealer to dry completely.

Apply your chosen paint color to the wood, using a good quality paintbrush. Use a paint specifically designed for wood, and apply two or three coats for good coverage. Allow the paint to fully dry before using the cube.

Construct as many cubes as you need following the same directions. Once all your cubes are completed, stack them as desired.
