2 pieces 12-by-48-by-¾-inch medium-density fiberboard

Place the two pieces of 12-by-48-by-¾-inch medium-density fiberboard on a work table with the long edges adjacent to each other. Measure from one end with a measuring tape and make marks at 12, 24 and 36 inches with a pencil.

Measure and make marks at 3/8-inch in both directions from the previous marks. This indicates the placement of the dividers. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the 12-inch depth of both MDF pieces.

Drill three pilot holes between the lines; one at 1 inch from each edge and one about midway with the 1/8-inch drill bit. Next, drill countersink holes on top of the pilot holes with a countersink drill bit. Drill the countersink holes deep enough to hide the screw heads. Leave the hole visible or fill it with wood putty before painting the storage cube.

Set the 12-by-12-by-¾-inch MDF material on the work table. These are the dividers creating cube-shaped sections in the overall storage cube. Apply glue between the lines drawn in Step 2 on one of the long pieces. Stand it on its long edge and secure the 12-by-12-by-¾-inch MDF dividers to it with the 2-inch drywall screws, using the drill and a Phillips-head bit. Clean up excess glue immediately with a damp cloth. Repeat this with the remaining long piece. Allow the glue to set up.

Apply paint in thin coats with a paintbrush for a professional look.

Let the wood putty dry before sanding it.

Build and stack as many storage cubes as needed.
